Is your lube oil system filtered and monitored efficiently?

The viscosity of oil in a lube system—and its impact on system bearings if not filtered appropriately—can adversely affect performance and cause catastrophic failures. SKF states:

“As long as particles larger than the lubricant film are removed, bearings can have an infinite life.”

Lubricants must be checked for contamination when the lube oil is delivered to the plant. Whether it is offline or online filtration, engineers should ensure the lube oil is clean and meets system specifications.

Chris Banks of Hydrasales advocates contamination control measures and strongly recommends that system designers and constructors incorporate simple, cost-effective equipment in their lubrication system designs to achieve and maintain cleanliness. He cites the inclusion of the following types of equipment for reducing contamination within hard-working systems. These applications often run 24/7, and the engineer cannot afford a breakdown or disruption in the working cycle.Hydraulic filter element showing fluid purification process from contaminated to clean oil.

A Medium-Pressure Inline Filter Range for Lubrication Filtration

A wide range of inline filtration options is available with flows from 200 L/min to 3,000 L/min and pressure capabilities from 20 bar to 80 bar.

Chris Banks says, “Hydrasales has full access to MP Filtri’s filter sizing software, allowing our customers peace of mind that the correct filter is identified for the application and can meet the design requirements.”

The LMP range consists of durable inline filters with a wide selection of element media, including water removal. According to Banks, “It is ideal for high-flow charge pump supply, return lines, or off-line filtration circuits.”

The duplex filter range, known as the LMD range, is designed to allow element changeout during continuous duty operations. This improves maintenance efficiency by eliminating downtime when a filter element requires replacement or cleaning.

He adds, “A water-removal element is available with 25-micron absolute filtration.” Benefits of water removal include:

  • Removal of particulate and water contamination
  • Improved system reliability and efficiency
  • Extended oil and hydraulic component life
  • Reduced risk of catastrophic failure
  • Lower replacement-part and maintenance costs, with less associated downtime
  • Increased equipment performance and improved productivity

Check Your Levels: Are You Sure Your Lubrication Is Being Delivered?

Lubrication systems deliver precise amounts of lubricant to multiple points at the right place and the right time. However, it can be challenging to ensure the lubricant reliably reaches each lube point.

Banks recommends cost-effective flow monitoring at critical points so flow can be seen and verified. Hydrasales supplies the Badger Meter product range, including Hedland variable-area flow meters available with a microswitch for low-flow alarms. Visual or electrical oil-level gauges can also be used, depending on the application.

Protect Your Pump with Accessible and Washable Suction Filters

MP Filtri’s Elixir range includes the SFEX inline suction filter with a wire-mesh cartridge and serviceable bowl and housing. This design allows the mesh element to be removed, inspected, and cleaned. By contrast, common spin-on oil filters cannot be cleaned and must be replaced, making the reusable cartridge element a more economical option.

Conventional suction strainers are often located at the bottom of the reservoir and are difficult to access—especially when the reservoir is full. The Elixir range is designed for higher flows with an improved connection system to reduce leakage and keep dirt out of the output circuit. The range can accommodate differential clogging indicators and pressures up to 16 bar.

Reservoir Desiccant Breathers for Moisture Extraction

Studies have shown that around seventy percent of equipment efficiency loss is due to surface degradation. The need for replacement parts is largely the result of corrosion, with mechanical wear accounting for most of the remainder. The most common causes of this corrosion and wear are dirt and moisture entering from outside the machine.

When moisture is present in lubricants or hydraulic fluids, numerous problems can arise: moisture leads to corrosion, which increases particulate contamination; it can also alter oil viscosity, deplete additives, and promote sludge formation. Reservoir desiccant breathers help prevent moisture ingress and mitigate these risks.
